The Future of Pee PDF Print E-mail
The New York Times recently ran a story praising China for the very sensible practice of turning human waste into fertilizer for farms and gardens. We've been doing this at the farm for over twenty years. Now you can learn how to do it at your home. applying pee to plants

So first you buy one of these slick urine diverting toilets to separate the poop and pee. Pee is what you really want to make plants grow. Poop adds organic material after it is composted but pee is where the nitrogen is.urine diverting toilet

You need to build a tank for the poop to compost in. I usually use either cement block or plywood. After the tank is built, coat the inside with foundation sealer or several coats of glossy paint. Venting is very important so you can get rid of the odor and moisture. Use four inch plastic drain tile to make a bed on the bottom of the tank. The vent intake should go right into the drain tile. Put a two inch deep layer of hay or straw across the drain tile as the base for your compost pile. The vent stack out of the top of the tank should be at least four to six inches in diameter. Flush with a two cup measure of peat moss. Now you're ready to make soil. composting chamber

You'll need a 55 gallon plastic barrel to collect the pee in. Simply run a hose from the urine diverter to the barrel.  It does not need to be vented. I fill a hose with water and stick it in the barrel to siphon pee to my garden where I collect it in buckets to dilute. You'll figure out what works best for you.  pee barrel

Once you get the pee to where you are going to use it, you'll be mixing around one gallon of pee to five gallons of water. Pee is for the most part sterile so it is safe to work with.  I've been doing it for over twenty years and haven't gotten sick once.  mixing pee

Now you just splash it around on everything that likes nitrogen. Put it on younger plants that aren't flowering yet. It gives them a big boost. Many plants will absorb nitrogen through their leaves. Sometimes I rinse plants with water after using pee tee. It depends on the plant and how developed it is. putting plants on nitrogen crack
